 Ask Namssor Daguerre why he started designing skin for Second Life and you'll get a straightforward answer: "I thought the avatars looked terrible!" This desire to beautify the virtual race became Second Skin Labs, one of Second Life's premier skin producers and Beta Business Park tenant. With business partner Cierrah Blair, Daguerre maintains a shop populated by male and female skins he creates from his database of more than 2,000 reference photographs. "I can combine features and create new skins from combining different ones. The database is constantly growing, and I look for good reference material on a regular basis." While off-the-shelf skin "kits" are what most people are looking for, Second Skin Labs also offers makeovers and custom work. "In the past, many people inquired about complete custom skins, and I was never able to quote them what they thought was a reasonable price because of the labor involved," he explains. "Avatar portraits were a solution to that problem." Working from customer-supplied high-resolution photos, Second Skin Labs can create a realistic "first life look" for your Second Life avatar. Daguerre thinks this kind of detailed work is the future. Avatars will "definitely [become] more realistic. That's where all the computer technology is headed. One need only look at the computer gaming industry and how it is closely tied into the film industry. My challenge is that the use of the technology then becomes more specialized, and the learning curve goes way up!" Ironically, Daguerre says "I tend not to worry too much about my appearance much any more. I'm way too involved in the appearance of others, and constantly change looks for testing purposes."
